Kayenne

Returning to a collaboration that spawned the No. 1 hit single “Someone,” internationally known DJ Kai Alcé’s NDATL Muzik imprint and singer/songwriter Kayenne partner once more for Genesis, the pair’s first full-length project.

The 16 tracks are truly distinctive, with five bonus cuts available only with the album purchase. Alcé himself is known for his ability to swing from his harder Detroit house roots to the more groove-based beats that his Atlanta homebase imbibes with gusto. So that he brought a few of his Atlanta-based colleagues to the table makes Genesis even more of a delight.

Not to be outdone by an outstanding cast of producers, Kayenne’s vocal chops and lyrical content are as strong as ever. The Baton Rouge, LA, native is clearly relishing the arrival of her daughter in each raspy run. In fact, the title of the album and its cover are a tribute to her, with the little girl speaking words of gratitude and appreciation for her family in the intro. She even follows in Mom’s footsteps with a singing cameo.

Fellow House in the Park / Atlanta Weekndr DJ Salah Ananse kicks off the tracks with “I Must Be Dreaming,” which he brings to Afro-house-infused perfection, followed by “My Call to You,” a multidimensional stepper that bears the signature of Grammy-winning producer DJ Kemit.

The keyboard stylings of Ricky Corey are a masterful accompaniment to a bassline that encourages you to bounce the way feeling good makes you want to on “Bliss (They Call It Love).” Combined with Kafélé Bandele’s trumpet, you could swing through the day with this music on repeat.

“Feel’n Some Kinda Way,” produced by Stefan Ringer, brings an intimate vibe that beckons you to hold someone close on the dancefloor.

Byron The Aquarius is the man to thank for the keys on “Brighter Day.” With a smoothed-out tone that reflects what it’s like to wait in hope and work toward breakthrough, Kayenne takes you there by sculpting the lyrics around the harmonies as both reassurance and a call to action.

“Rain Fall Down” is a chamber of release and refresh, with Chris Brann of the Ananda Project and Wamdue Project taking listeners into a world that blends the best of low-fi sounds and technical expertise behind the boards.

Prepare to put “Hey Young World” on your deep house favorites list. Alcé is at his best here, bringing the groove and hypnotic percussion that makes you want to close your eyes on the dancefloor and work yourself into a sweat without even realizing it. Bandele tips throughout the track on trumpet, grounding you once more.

“Genesis” is just as sweet in sound as it is in sentiment. The title is also the name of Kayenne's daughter, who inspired this final song. The track boasts a mellow yet buoyant feel, but it’s Kayenne’s chorus vocals that become brighter and more potent – a way for Alcé to sweep listeners along a lovely vista of warmth.
Closing things out, on the album-only “Genesis (Bonus Instrumental)” version, the saxophone by Tonya Greene is a rewarding culmination of an album filled with gems.
“Love Don’t Love You Back” and “Someone” are resurfaced as part of the bonus pack as well, and it’s a joy to tune in to the different versions.

With “Love Don’t Love You Back” – originally released on the acclaimed dance label Basement Boys Records – it’s a choice between the hard warehouse-style pounding of the NDATL Original, or the Unreleased Teddy Douglas Salvation Edit that is 100% radio-ready, brimming with a sound that fans of throwback-’80s house will fall in love with.
With Kayenne’s voice and deliberate lyrical craftsmanship known to pull on your heartstrings, and Alcé’s house music production that’s sure to move your body and your soul, Genesis is a signal to begin and end with excellence in all its forms.
